Formed in 2014, Alma Menor emerged from a creative partnership that began in 2011 between accordionist Tiago Marques and bagpipe player Tiago Morais. From the very start, the project stood out for its originality and continual exploration of fresh sonic landscapes. Coupling their own compositions with inventive arrangements, Alma Menor has become one of the most exciting voices in the wave of new Portuguese traditional music.
In its early phase, the duo explored various instruments—including guitar, cavaquinho, and sanfona—but soon discovered their signature sound: the vibrant interplay of bagpipes with the richness and adaptability of the accordion.
Their debut album, Em Tons de Aguarela (2018), featured collaborations with acclaimed musicians from Portugal’s traditional music scene, helping to bring to life their artistic vision and deepen their unique sound palette.
The year 2024 marked a bold new chapter: the release of Raízes de Xisto, the first installment in a planned trilogy. This project reflects Alma Menor’s artistic evolution—from the writing of each score to the final performance—culminating in a work that pushes the boundaries of traditional Portuguese music.
Built on years of friendship, performances, and shared melodies, Alma Menor’s musical journey reflects both maturation and innovation. With Raízes de Xisto heralding the beginning of a trilogy, the duo promises to continue inspiring emotional depth and creative discovery.
