Bede Patterson

Bede Patterson is a highland bagpiper from Sydney, Australia, now based in Glasgow. A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in traditional Scottish music, Bede is passionate about exploring the expressive potential of the bagpipes beyond conventional settings.

He is the founder of The Nexus Project, a boundary-pushing ensemble that re-imagines traditional pipe music through the lenses of jazz, improvisation, and contemporary sound.

As a composer, he creates new works for the Highland bagpipe that, while non-traditional in setting, remain deeply rooted in the theme-and-variation structures of classical pipe music. His work is heavily inspired by the Ceol Nua approach, a term coined by piper-composer Matthew Welch.

Bede’s academic research includes a comparative investigation of Piobaireachd and other musical traditions, reflecting his commitment to deepening and diversifying the cultural dialogue around the pipes.
