Bruce Hitchings MBE BEM is a world-renowned bagpiper, instructor, innovator, and military musician whose influence spans decades and continents.
Bruce is a world-renowned bagpiper, military musician, and innovator. Born in Hunterville, New Zealand, he began piping at age 11 and went on to perform with the champion City of Wellington Pipe Band before moving to Scotland in the mid-1970s.
Bruce served over 30 years in the British Army, rising to WO1 Senior Pipe Major and Chief Instructor at the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming. He was awarded both the British Empire Medal and an MBE for his contributions to military piping. As a top-level solo competitor, he won the prestigious Silver Medal at the Argyllshire Gathering.
A prolific teacher and international judge, Bruce has taught and adjudicated worldwide. In 2000, he founded Highland Reeds, developing innovative piping products used globally. He has also produced major international military tattoos and currently chairs the UK Solo Piping Judges’ Association.
Bruce continues to be a leading figure in the piping world, known for his technical expertise, musicality, and dedication to the tradition and future of the Great Highland bagpipe.
