The Canterbury Caledonian Society Grade 3 Pipe Band is one of three bands under the Society’s proud banner. Entirely homegrown, the Grade 3 band is composed of passionate pipers and drummers from across the Canterbury region. With a dynamic mix of youthful energy and seasoned experience, this band exemplifies the Society’s commitment to mentorship and tradition.
The band is deeply rooted in the community, with several families boasting two or more members playing together. It's a true family band—known not only for their strong performances but also for their camaraderie, humor, and the occasional celebratory fizzy beverage.
Mentoring is at the heart of the band’s philosophy. Members actively support the development of players from the Grade 4 and Juvenile bands, helping them refine their skills and progress through the ranks.
An accomplished soloist and band piper, Harrison Allen is a shining example of the Society’s mentorship ethos. Beginning his piping journey in Grade 4 as a young lad, he steadily rose through the ranks to Grade 1 before taking the reins as Musical Director of the Grade 3 band. Coming from a family deeply involved in the Caledonian Society and Scottish culture, Harrison brings tradition, dedication, and a sharp wit to every band practice.
Scott Graveston leads the drum corps with experience and flair. A veteran of bands at all levels, he oversees a well-rounded corps of snare, bass and tenor drummers, blending seasoned players with enthusiastic younger members. His leadership keeps the corps sharp and spirited. Scott’s passion for drumming is clearly contagious—his young son is already following in his footsteps, hinting at a bright future for the Graveston legacy within the Society.
Matthew Croft is a rising star in the world of Drum Majoring. Not only does he lead the band with confidence and precision, he has also embraced mace flourishing, adding flair to every parade. A valued member of the pipe corps as well, Matthew balances his musical commitments with a high-flying career—literally—as a full-time pilot.
This vibrant, tight-knit group continues to embody the spirit of Scottish heritage, mentorship, and community that the Canterbury Caledonian Society is known for—piping, drumming, and laughing all the way.
