John Mulhearn is one of Highland piping's most singular voices, equally at home in the most traditional or experimental of contexts.
His 2020 album, The Pipe Factory, released at the height of pandemic restrictions, is an expression of place and the sonic possibilities of the pipes. With percussionist Iain Sandilands, and electronic artist Alan Bryden, he reimagines the album in a live setting: a Glaswegian soundscape set against fizzing drones, booming beats, and traditionally inspired melodies, Mulhearn "makes a powerful case for the highland bagpipes as a versatile, irresistible instrument, and the source of a new, Scottish sound" (The Quietus).
