Kathryn Tickell OBE is the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian smallpipes and an internationally acclaimed composer, performer, educator and recording artist. Deeply
rooted in the landscape, traditions and people of Northumberland, her music draws on a rich heritage while embracing influences from jazz, classical, traditions from around the world and contemporary music.
Kathryn (who is a multi-instrumentalist) began playing the Northumbrian smallpipes at the age of nine and released her first album at just sixteen. Since then, she has released 19 albums, composed extensively for orchestras and ensembles, and collaborated with artists including Sting, Jacob Collier, The Chieftains, Evelyn Glennie and The Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
A recipient of both the OBE and the Queen's Medal for Music (notably the first non-classical musician to receive the honour) Kathryn has twice been named BBC Radio 2 Folk Musician of the Year. She currently tours with her acclaimed band The Darkening, presents BBC Radio 3's Music Planet, and continues to champion the next generation of musicians through her Young Musicians Fund, which has raised over £100,000 to support young people across the north-east of England.
