Meallan

Meallan are an exciting new group of emerging traditional musicians, bringing together Fiddle, Clàrsach, Accordion, Guitar, Keyboard, and Gaelic Song in a fresh and dynamic blend. The six-piece band formed during the summer of 2024 while touring nationally with the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail, where their instant chemistry and shared musical vision became clear. Highlights of that tour included performances at Belladrum, Cambridge Folk Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival.

Officially launching as a band in January 2025, Meallan made their debut at Celtic Connections on Campus—followed just a few hours later by a second performance at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall’s Danny Kyle Open Stage.  Still riding high from their appearance at Orkney Folk Festival in May 2025—an especially special moment for their own Orcadian fiddler, Kirsty Harrison—Meallan are making their mark on the folk scene with energy and heart.

The band features BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2024 semi-finalist Eòin Cumming (Laide) on accordion and vocals, fiddlers Kirsty Harrison (Orkney) and Ruby Smith (Newcastle), clàrsach player Catriona Kane (Dunblane), guitarist Anja Maclennan (Dingwall), and keyboard player Matthew Duncan (Glasgow).

Drawing inspiration from the landscapes of their travels—and their diverse musical backgrounds—Meallan create a sound that’s rooted in tradition but open to new ideas. Each member brings tunes and styles from their home region, shaping an original voice influenced by music from across Scotland, England, and Ireland. Between them, they’ve performed widely across the UK and Europe, and are quickly becoming known for their lively performances and thoughtful compositions.

The name Meallan—Gaelic for “a small hill”—pays tribute to the many hills and journeys that sparked their collaboration.
