His approach to piobaireachd has been heavily influenced by the “Balmoral style.”
Some of his accomplishments include winning both Highland Society of London Gold Medals, six Clasps at the Northern Meeting, five Silver Chanters, the Bratach Gorm five times, the Former Winners MSR at London five times, and becoming a four-time Glenfiddich Champion. A highly respected tutor and mentor, with students having achieving success from Amateur level to the Glenfiddich Championship.
In 2016, Murray was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. He is a Senior Adjudicator for the Solo Pipers’ Judges Association and has judged internationally, including at all major events in Scotland. Spanning five decades, his competitive achievements have made him one of the world’s most successful pipers.
Murray's wife, Patricia is also a Senior SPJA Adjudicator. Their daughters, Fiona and Faye, have both competed at Glenfiddich Championships — Fiona in fiddle and Faye in piping, where she qualified as a Highland Society of London Gold Medallist.
