Murrumba Pipes and Drums was originally formed by the Ellis family in 1995 for social, entertainment and competition purposes. After a decade long break from the competition scene, Murrumba Pipes and Drums Soc. Inc. once again entered the competition arena. Our members come from far and wide across the eastern seaboard of Australia.
The band proudly wears the ‘Scotland 2000’ Tartan with argyll jackets, has a full kit of British Drum Company drums, and is financially sound. This was achieved by strong dedication and member support. Besides participating at all local competitions, Murrumba have broadened their horizons to include overseas competitions. Also, we regularly participate in a number of festivals in Queensland and interstate, which provides our members with lots of playing experience, support, companionship and mateship within a seriously committed environment and at the other end of the spectrum a light-hearted atmosphere where the focus is on more playing filled with fun and good times. We also have a concert band to complete the musical presentation for a full evening of entertainment when so required. 2018 saw the band competing in Scotland during the lead up to and including ‘The Worlds’ competition earning a 3rd Place in Perth. December 2019 saw us in competition in New Zealand in both Christchurch and Palmeston North again achieving a 3rd place.
Murrumba was planning to re-visit Scotland in 2020, but had to postpone due to covid, but are now planning a return trip to Scotland in August 2025. Our planning is nearing completion, and our group of members and supporters are getting very excited about our upcoming trip. We are competing in the European Championships and ‘The Words’ in Glasgow. Besides that, the band is spending the week in Scotland prior to the Championships with a full program of touring and playing. First stop is Oban for a two day visit and ferry to Iona. The next adventure we hope to partake is the Jacaobite Steam train journey. We have a visit to Pitlochry planned where we join the Vale of Athol for a march, concert in the park and friendship evening; A visit to Stirling Castle; Falkirk Wheel and Robert the Bruce Statue on the way where we will conduct a photo shoot. Evening in Edinburgh with some members going to the tattoo, whilst others explore Edinburgh. Playouts in Buchanan Street in Glasgow Central all mixed with rehearsal sessions each day in the lead up to the Worlds on the second Saturday of our visit. Then on the second Sunday the group disburses for personal travels before returning to Australia.
Murrumba is always ready to welcome new members to enjoy the journey.
