The project is completely free to take part in, removing financial barriers that often prevent young people from accessing music education. Every beginner is loaned a practice chanter or sticks and pad, allowing them to start learning straight away, and through the generous support of SSPDT, many of our players are also able to access bagpipe loans as they progress. This support ensures that talent and enthusiasm, not family income, determine who gets to play.

Tynecastle Youth Community Pipe Band is proudly community-led. Instead, the band is sustained by a dedicated parent committee who work tirelessly to fundraise, apply for grants, and manage the day-to-day running of the project. Their efforts help cover the cost of professional piping and drumming tutors who deliver high-quality tuition in schools, as well as the expenses involved in running and maintaining a competitive pipe band.

Thanks to this commitment, the band has been able to grow in confidence and ability, competing successfully in Novice B and giving young players valuable performance experience. Beyond competitions, the band provides something just as important: teamwork, discipline, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

After ten years, Tynecastle Youth Community Pipe Band remains a powerful example of what a community can achieve when it comes together to support its young people keeping tradition alive while building skills, friendships, and pride that will last a lifetime.
