Honouring the Strathspey King: The James Scott Skinner Statue Campaign

A national campaign to honour one of Scotland’s most iconic cultural figures—legendary fiddler and composer James Scott Skinner—is entering its final fundraising phase.

Born in Banchory in 1843, Skinner, affectionately known as “The Strathspey King”, was a towering figure in Scottish music. A dancing master, virtuoso violinist, and one of Scotland’s earliest recording artists, he composed over 700 pieces and performed across the British Isles and North America, gracing renowned stages such as the London Palladium and Royal Albert Hall.

Now, nearly a century after his death in 1927, efforts are underway to ensure Skinner’s legacy is permanently commemorated in his hometown. Led by acclaimed fiddler Dr Paul Anderson MBE, the campaign will see a life-sized bronze statue erected in Scott Skinner Square, Banchory, in 2027—marking the centenary of his passing.

Launched in 2021, the campaign has already raised £31,000 of its £50,000 target. The celebrated sculptor David Annand has completed a striking clay model of the statue. The final stage involves bronze casting and installation.

“James Scott Skinner was not only a prolific composer, but a bridge between classical technique and traditional Scottish music,” says Dr Anderson. “His music remains central to the repertoire today—not just for fiddlers, but for pipers too.”

Skinner’s influence extends deep into the piping tradition, having composed numerous tunes in the piping idiom and maintained a close friendship with legendary piper George S. McLennan, who played at his funeral. Recent research by Iain Duncan of Campbeltown has helped bring Skinner’s piping-inspired works to new audiences through fresh arrangements.

As the campaign enters its final stage, supporters are calling on lovers of traditional music, Scottish heritage, and local history to help reach the fundraising goal. Donations of any size will help bring this long-overdue tribute to life and celebrate one of Scotland’s true musical giants.
